Project Intern – Reston, VA

The engineering design team works with colleagues from other departments internally on various projects throughout the city. This is an opportunity to be part of a development team working on the East Towers project at Howard University during Summer 2023.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Engage in design review, project documentation, CAD drafting and participate in:
    • External (client) & internal (WM) virtual design team meetings
    • Site visit with the assigned Engineer or PM
  • Follow up on requests for information related to construction permits, such as processing and payment.
 
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled at Howard University as a rising Junior or Senior as of May 2023
  • Ability to work independently or on a team

Major Responsibilities:

  • To communicate extensively with the principals on a weekly basis.
  • To oversee the development and completion of site plan designs.
  • To lead detailed technical and process expertise in the design and permitting of projects in Arlington, Alexandria, Loudon and Fairfax counties.
  • To assist in the training and development of staff on technical design and review processes specific to the Northern Virginia sector.
  • To develop existing and new Client relationships.

  • To assume Project Management of various projects that may be existing within WM’s portfolio, or new projects that come on-line after the start date.

Skills Required:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience on relevant projects in NOVA;

  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills;
  • Ability to interact socially and at mixed engagements with clients;
  • Must be Highly Proficient in AutoCAD.

Education Requirements:

  • Licensed PE in VA;
  • BS in Civil Engineering.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Create site designs independently under broad direction from a Project Manager on various site design projects using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or Microstation platforms.
  • Perform non-routine design assignments requiring application of advanced CAD techniques and provide basic and complex design calculations.
  • Complete detailed construction drawings and manage internal production staff to meet deadlines for site development projects that include site layout, site grading, and site utilities for commercial, institutional, infrastructure and transportation projects.
  • Address technical and production related questions from production staff to guide and shape the design and delivery of a wide variety of projects.
  • Receive and coordinate project direction from Project Manager or client and then delegate to production staff.
  • Ability to liaise comfortably with clients, and staff.
  • Implement project specific AutoCAD, Civil 3D or Microstation CAD requirements, and coordinate production with other firms to ensure conformance with company and/or client standards.
  • Work closely with architecture, engineering and other disciplines on large scale projects.
  • Work independently with occasional advice from manager.

Skills Required:

  • Must be extremely proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or Microstation.
  • Must be an enthusiastic communicator that can work independently as well as enjoying a collaborative work environment.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience as a Project Engineer or Designer focused on a variety of commercial and institutional scale site designs.
  • Virginia or Maryland experience a must. DC experience is considered a significant plus.
  • Experience in developing own time management and organizational skills required to undertake multiple projects or facets of various projects.
  • Strong technical and construction knowledge.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of grading, construction materials and detailing.
  • Ability to organize and direct work assignments and develop junior staff.

Education Requirements:

  • At minimum, E.I.T.
  • BS in Civil Engineering.

Entry Level Landscape Architect – Reston, VA

Wiles Mensch Landscape Architecture Studio is a design studio within a larger multi-disciplinary site development consulting firm. The studio focuses on strong collaborative site design, dynamic environments, and dedicated to growing and expanding its presence in the DMV.

  • Generating initial design concept and development (hand/computer).
  • Presentation drawing preparation.
  • Detail design and construction drawing preparation for both landscape and general site designs including layout, grading, and hardscape
  • Working with project team members to guide and shape the design and delivery of projects of a variety of scale and type.
  • Urban Streetscape, Courtyards, Plazas Design.

Skills Required:

  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience as a Landscape Architect focused on a variety of urban projects.
  • Ability to work independently on computer generated designs, and within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills required to undertake multiple projects or facets of various projects.
  • Good design and graphic communication (hand/computer) skills.
  • Strong plant knowledge, including natives
  • Working knowledge of grading, construction materials and detailing.
  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.
  • Must be Highly Proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe, Microsoft Office and Sketchup.  Working knowledge of Revit would also be preferred.

Education Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from an accredited degree program.
  • Master’s Degree preferred
