Wiles Mensch Corporation – DC (WM) provided civil engineering services for the field repair, alteration, and resurfacing of deteriorating athletic fields for American University. The proposed project includes a combination synthetic turf field hockey and dirt softball field.
The core of the renovation was the replacement of the field’s original turf from the complex’s opening in 2005. Scope of work included removal of the existing synthetic turf surface layer and design of a new synthetic turf detail, which includes a permeable asphalt drainage layer, reusing the existing flat underdrains, and reusing the existing stone base layers to the maximum extent practical.
WM also documented and processed the proposed turf field alteration for stormwater management retention compliance with DOEE for approval. An evaluation of the drainage area contributing to the existing synthetic turf field was performed to establish whether any further additional stormwater management features would be required by DOEE as part of this project.
